Joan Pitman (1917–2004)
(Film stars, costumes and accessories)

1931–33
watercolour and pencil
Presented by the family of the artist under the Cultural Gifts Program, 2007

Joan Pitman was a 14 year old girl living in Tasmania when she made these beautiful paper dolls of Hollywood starlets and their outfits.

Joan made more than 30 sets of these dolls to play with. The one shown here is Katharine Hepburn; a film star from the 1930s who was famous for her wild red hair, outspoken attitude and unique fashion sense. Although all the paper costumes here are dresses, Hepburn frequently wore mens-style trousers. This made her a rebel in her time.

What famous people do you admire? What is it about them that you think makes them exceptional?
