Tasmanian Colonial Decorative Arts 1803–1930

This website presents a selection of Tasmanian colonial decorative arts from the collection of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.  For stylistic rather than historical reasons, the colonial period is understood to extend from the foundation of the British colony in 1803 to 1930.  Following this period, a complex mix of improved communications,  industrialisation and a broader range stylistic influences makes design and cultural production in Tasmania more consistent with international developments.

This website was made possible through the generous support of the Gordon Darling Foundation, which provided funds for research, equipment and website design.
